Climate Change

Adapting to New Realities Together

Let’s be honest—climate change isn’t some distant threat in Somalia. It’s here. Our communities face longer droughts, unpredictable rains, and food systems under stress. We see how this directly affects nutrition, especially for children and pregnant women.

But we also see incredible resilience. Somali communities have survived in challenging environments for generations. Our work is about combining that traditional wisdom with new strategies to help families adapt.

What we do:

  • Promote drought-resistant crops that provide nutrition even in tough conditions
  • Support climate-smart agriculture practices that work with nature, not against it
  • Help communities diversify their food sources so they’re not dependent on one crop or one season
  • Advocate for policies that recognize the link between climate change and nutrition
  • Share early warning information so families can prepare for climate shocks

When the rains failed for the third year in a row, the village of Balcad was ready. Through our climate adaptation program, they had already shifted to drought-resistant sorghum varieties and had built small water catchment systems. While neighboring villages struggled, Balcad’s children maintained healthy nutrition levels.
